Thursday Thunder’s 2024 season continued Wednesday night with Round 3, the front end of back-to-back nights of competition this week. The night of racing across all eight divisions was defined by several Thursday Thunder stars taking their latest victories, though some new winners conquered their division’s giants to score an upset.
One of the most spirited battles came in the WJP Investments Pro division feature. Garrett Gumm (Brooks, Ga.) started on pole in his No. 5 car and battled with a hard-charging No. 32 car driven by Stockbridge’s Jensen Jorgenson, last week’s winner and the defending champion of the division. Gumm had several close calls, but ultimately outdueled the defending champ to earn his first WJP Investments Pro win and his first in any division since a Bandits victory in 2019.
Another highlight was the Semi-Pro division feature’s battle between polesitter Cooper Gaul (Seminole, Fla.) and Jesse Martinez (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Martinez cleared Gaul for the lead on the opening lap, but Gaul fought right back, managing to get underneath Martinez to take the lead right back on the second lap. Gaul’s next challenge came from the No. 48x of Griffin, Ga.’s Nolan Ryan, who appeared to have the best long run speed. Ryan worked his way to 2nd and closed in on the back of Gaul’s No. 8 car, but couldn’t find a way around to take the win away. Gaul, the champion of The Associates Group Young Lions division last year, held on to earn his first victory since being promoted to the Semi-Pro division.
Cole Denton scored his second consecutive victory in The Associates Group Young Lions division after holding off a hungry Lane Christiansen. In the Master division three-time champ Bill Plemons Jr. earned his second win of the season and 35th of his Thursday Thunder career.
In Bandoleros feature race competition Bryson Nichols (Hampton, Va.) took the checkered flag in the Adrenalin Powersports Outlaws Division while fellow Virginian Wyatt Coffey was victorious in the Bandits division. Addyson King (Mooresville, N.C.) and Casen Tate (Zebulon, Ga.) were winners in the Chargers and Rookie Bandolero racing experiences.
Thursday Thunder races to the halfway point of its 2024 season as Round 4 completes this week’s doubleheader on Thursday night. Drivers will return to the Thunder Ring looking to either defend their wins or dethrone Wednesday’s winners and take their own trip to victory lane.
