There are two ways to be linked with history. You can either hear about it after it happens or be part of it.
In less than 55 days, you can be part of an unforgettable moment in history at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The 2017 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR weekend will mark the final race on Atlanta's legendary racing surface before it's repaved following the race weekend.
Atlanta's racing surface has earned a reputation of challenging the best drivers in NASCAR. It’s wearing down of tires faster than at other larger tracks makes driving cars more of a challenge, forcing drivers to get up on the wheel to earn a strong finish and go for a coveted victory at one of racing’s most iconic facilities.
"We go fast for a few laps, the tires fall off and then we’re sliding around," Denny Hamlin said. "That’s old-school type racing, it’s probably the last true race track we have like that."
And that surface has given fans some memorable moments. From the razor-thin finishes resulting in wins by Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt to the thrilling back-and-forth duel between Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson in 2011, we’ve seen incredible instances of drivers being pushed to their limits by Atlanta’s abrasive asphalt.
"Atlanta is a race track that you can kind of run anywhere you want. It’s rough," Ricky Stenhouse Jr. said. “The tires wear out. And I think the cars being sideways and not really handling exactly like you want is fun.”
There's just one final chance to see racing our current surface, and that time will be March 3-5 for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. Tickets start at $39 and can be purchased online or by calling (844) 201-1653.
